Impact Talk: How Social Workers Improve the Lives of MillionsRichard Lewis Jones, PhD (SAS '75; GRS '81, social welfare) Mandel School Visiting Committee member and NASW social work pioneer Social workers are on the front lines, helping communities navigate the real-life impact of shifting policies on housing, healthcare and social services. Federal funding cuts threaten behavioral health care, increasing instability for many Americans. As essential advocates and support providers, social workers must stay informed, combat misinformation and guide clients through uncertain times. Their role extends beyond crisis response—they shape policies, advocate for justice and provide hope. To sustain this vital work, they must also prioritize self-care and support networks. Dr. Jones will provide an overview of the vital role social workers play in supporting vulnerable communities and highlight challenges such as high education costs, licensure barriers and burnout, while also noting progress through the Social Work Licensure Compact and new financial support for students and graduates.
